The Nikon D3000 and the Canon EOS 1000D have pretty similar specifications, so you won't compromise much if you go with either.
As for the Nikon D5000 and the Canon EOS 500D, the former has a tiltable LCD which is handy for overhead or waist level shots. However, the EOS 500D records video in 1080p quality whereas the Nikon does only 720p. So if you want higher quality footages, you should go for the Canon.
Regarding the Nikon D60 and Canon EOS 450D, they are discontinued and have since been replaced with the D5000 and EOS 500D, respectively.
If you need just a basic, no-frills snapper, then either the D3000 or EOS 1000D should do just fine. But if you want to take video with your dSLR, the EOS 500D and D5000 are the candidates.
