Carefully monitoring your digital camera's light sensitivity, or ISO, is key to creating clear shots. On your camera, start at ISO 800 and see how your first frames look, adjusting to a higher or lower ISO depending on your results. The more light on the stage, the lower your ISO will need to be.
Next, choose a shutter speed between 1/60 and 1/160 of a second. Many cameras include a shutter priority mode, where your camera determines the appropriate aperture, or F stop, for your selected shutter speed. The camera will most likely choose a low F stop, such as f/2.8.
Getting sharp images with a shutter speed slower than 1/60 is difficult when shooting stage performers with a hand-held camera, and tripods are often not convenient in a concert setting. In this case, the photographer can use a monopod or a few hand-holding tricks. To keep stable while shooting, lean against a wall or rest your arms on a table or banister.
If sharpness isn't a concern, shoot at slower shutter speeds and experiment with blurred images and movement on stage. Shoot a lot of images to capture the many different expressions and emotions being displayed.
