No big surprises here; Nikon has been killing with the low light performance of the D3 series, and Canon needed to retaliate. Enough resolution for any wedding photographer, for many landscape guys, and probably plenty for sports. Some sports shooters may want a bit more pixel density, but with improved high ISO capability compared to 1D IV, it’s nothing a 1.4x TC and higher ISO can’t compensate for if this body is desired. The cleaner images will make up for the rest.
Amazing ultra high ISO images aren’t a major priority of mine, but something cleaner in the 800-1600 range would be nice. The 7D is great at low ISO, but when bumped up a little bit you have to be very careful to not underexpose when the higher ISOs are needed.
It looks great enough that I can assume they will stick sensors like this in to cheaper bodies in the future. Looks like I’ll be swapping my Tamron 17-50 F2.8 for a Canon 17-40 F4L in the next year or two, and moving to full frame for my next body. at some point in the next 6-7 years (about how long I expect the 7D to last).
