Canon T2i: The Goldilocks of digital cameras

The new Canon T2i falls somewhere in between a weighty professional SLR and a shove-in-your-pocket amateur camera . It focuses on the growing market of enthusiasts – people with a good eye but little training, prepared to spend money on their passion but not more than $1,000.

Due out in March, the EOS Rebel T2i gives last year's T1i an improved megapixel count, faster shutter, and stronger HD video features. Plus, fans of the T1i will be happy to learn that its simple body and clear interface will carry over to the new generation.

The new 18-megapixel setting goes well beyond the comparably priced Sony Alpha A500 and Nikon D90 – both with 12.3 megapixels. (Just remember: More megapixels doesn't mean better pix . Despite this higher count, the T2i's image sensor is slightly smaller than its competitors, suggesting pictures may come with more odd blotches and color fluctuation. But, to be fair, such imperfections are often only apparent when you zoom in on a picture or print it in a large format.)

Nikon D90 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera | Care To Share

Now that the reports are coming in about the quality of Nikon’s DSLR’s, I have to warn consumers against buying these cameras. The most frightening thing about the D90 is also the most exciting: video at 24fps! Unfortunately this camera may have been rushed to market in the same way as many other Nikon cameras: at the expense of the consumer. Nikon’s corporate philosophy is one of cavalier features and its very sad that they do this by sacrificing build-quality. Nikon: you cannot have your cake and eat it too. Slow down a little but and put some love into these builds. After owning a Nikon DSLR that began to fail right after the warranty expired I offer this piece of wisdom: go Canon.

As many other reviews confirm, this is a good digital camera. After buying mine, however, I was disappointed to find that Nikon provides very poor support to users who do any kind of software post-processing with their pictures.

Nikon again changed the file format for this camera versus older models. As a result, most of the software you have probably won’t work. Not only do you need the newest versions of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements if you’re using Adobe products (ok, Nikon might argue that’s Adobe’s problem, but then, they provide no support to Adobe) – but wait, even your own Nikon software may not work at all! Neither the older Nikon Capture 4 photo editing software nor the relatively new Capture NX can read files shot with your D90! Nikon’s technical support say there’s nothing they can do about that and I should buy ($180) or upgrade ($100) to the newest version, Capture NX 2. In my case, all I’m using my Capture software for is to de-fisheye pictures taken with Nikon’s 10.5mm lens, which worked well with my previous Nikon cameras. No more.
