New Olympus PEN E-PL1 Is Aimed at Everyday Users
The E-PL1, which is compatible with all Micro Four Thirds lenses, will be sold in a kit with a 14mm to 42mm (28mm to 84mm equivalent) f3.5/5.6 zoom lens.
The previous versions of the PEN were snapped up primarily by advanced photographers who wanted something smaller than their bulky D.S.L.R.’s, says Sally Smith Clemens, product manager for Olympus. The E-PL1 is a step-up model aimed at everyday users, she says.
“Most consumers don’t understand specs like sensor size; they just know that their friends with D.S.L.R. cameras get better photos,” says Ms. Clemens, adding that the image quality of the new consumer-friendly PEN will be on par with company’s E-620 D.S.L.R. camera as well as the original PENs.
The E-PL1 has a Live Guide interface that enables users to adjust settings such as aperture, shutter speed and white balance without any knowledge of photography. For instance, to achieve a shallow depth of field, simply select “Blur background” and adjust an on-screen slider to adjust the level of blur. Similarly, you can use the Express Motion option in Live Guide to capture fast-moving subjects with an artistic blur or freeze the action.
