A little less than a week ago I purchased a Olympus PEN series micro four thirds format camera. Since then I have gotten to know the camera pretty well, as well as the reasons for its existence in the Digital Camera market.
Until recently there have been about four kinds of common place digital cameras on the market: Basic Compacts, Advanced Compacts, Bridge/Superzoom, and DSLRs. There wasn’t a middle ground for a small light camera with interchangeable lenses, at least not for under $6000(Body Only! Leica M9). Olympus took there chance to fill this gap with the addition of the first Olympus PEN E-P1 which was styled like a rangefinder, rather than a miniature SLR(Panasonic Lumix G1), the downside was the lack of an integrated viewfinder. After the success of the first camera another was released by the name of the E-P2, adding yet more features. After that release Olympus began to target a different audience as more users more familiar with compacts were switching to the PEN.
To fill this emerging market Olympus produced the E-PL1 a more compact oriented interchangeable Lens Camera(ILC). While only slightly smaller than the E-P2 the E-PL1 didn’t feature the control wheels present on its predecessor, however a significantly lower price point seems to have legitimized this course...
